Facing Sustainability Award
Photos – People – Stories of Sustainability
Sustainability means protecting the environment while acting in a socially equitable and economically responsible way. Sustainable development means leaving a world for future generations which is environmentally, socially, and economically intact. People are actively working for these goals every day all over the world.
Give sustainability a face
Show us someone in your area who is active for a sustainable world. Take a photo of your friend who works for human rights, or your neighbour who works on an organic farmyard, show us your professor who carried out exciting research projects on relevant topics, or show us a politician who takes the fight against poverty and the protection of the environment seriously even when it is not the run-up to an election.
You can send in up to three photos. We are looking for portrait photos, or close-ups, but they can be accompanied by photos of objects or landscapes which have a direct link to the person portrayed. But you can also choose to show various people. Give a face to the different aspects of sustainability and show people who are working for a fairer future.
Tell us your story
Just as important as the photo is the story of the person it shows. Tell us who you have photographed, what is special about this person and why you have chosen them in particular. What is so special about them? How as they active for sustainability in economic affairs, social concerns, or the environment?
Take part and show us active people that you know.
Amateur and professional photographers of all ages are invited to submit entries for this competition.
You can present your photos and story directly on the web site www.facing-sustainability.org.
What can you look forward to?
The photos will be assessed by a high-profile jury at the beginning of August. This includes Tobi Schlegl – TV presenter, musician and member of the German Council for Sustainable Development – and two highly acclaimed photographers. Bettina Flitner is known for work that lies “between documentary journalism and staged fiction”. Frank Ossenbrink has made a name for himself for his portraits of political personalities. The jury will be boosted by the photo editor of National Geographic, Kathrin Müller, and by a school student and teacher from the Transfer-21 programme of the BLK, the Bund-Länder Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion.
We’ve managed to gain the services of the ‘National Geographic’ science magazine. The winning photos will be featured in the magazine after the award ceremony.
The winners, and those portrayed by them, will be invited to Berlin where they will take part in an exciting programme and award ceremony as part of the annual congress organised by the German Council for Sustainable Development. The winner of the competition will be awarded 1000 euros-worth of ecological capital investment products from Versiko AG. Other prizes include a solar package, an outdoor jacket and a gift hamper full of fair trade products.
The “Facing Sustainability Award” is a contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and is organised in cooperation with the BLK-Programme Transfer-21.
