Sustainability is more than just a buzz-word. While international politicians are struggling with the idea of sustainability and trying to form it into political strategies, people everywhere are already trying to change the world with their actions. They are tackling environmental problems and social challenges, and re-defining economic growth.
For them, sustainability means stopping the destruction of the environment and improving the living standards of the poor people in the world. They are motivated by a conviction that all people should have an opportunity for a good future. With their own initiatives they support other people trying to make the most of their opportunities, and help them to turn ideas into plans and plans into actions. They identify what works and what doesn't. They form new partnerships and alliances. They encourage other people to become involved and find solutions. With their knowledge and abilities they encourage others to face up to challenges. Sustainability still seems unrealistic and far over the horizon, but in 1750 many people felt the same way about democracy.
People who work actively for positive developments are “Agents of Change”. They lead the world into a sustainable future in their neighbourhood, in their family, with their friends and colleagues, or wherever they work - in a small enterprise, in a major company, in a government organisation, or in the local community. For all their different approaches, political opportunities, financial potential, and practical experience, what they all have in common is a strong feeling for the environment, justice, and a lifestyle which respects the possibilities of other people and does not obstruct these.
