Facing Sustainability Award – a media partnership with National Geographic + + + First competition entries already online at www.facing-sustainability.de

Berlin, 30 March 2005. The highly acclaimed “National Geographic” Magazine is supporting the ‘facing sustainability’ photo competition organised by the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE). Amateur and professional photographers are asked to photograph people who, through their activities, are doing their bit to furthering sustainability. They can be celebrities or the next-door neighbour, a student or a member of a project team. Selected photos from the competition will be featured in the October issue of the journal.

The jury

National Geographic’s photo editor, Kathrin Müller, will be part of the jury. Other jury members include Council member Tobi Schlegl and two leading photographers: Bettina Flitner is renowned for work that “lies between documentary journalism and staged fiction”. She caused a stir with her photo series entitled “I’m proud to be a far-right-winger”. Her latest work is a portrayal of “50 Europeans – important women with visions”. Frank Ossenbrink, considered to be the photographer of the magazine ‘Berliner Republik’ (‘Berlin Republic’) due to his “particularly close contacts with politicians”, is also a jury member. His extensive picture library provided the basic source material when Focus Magazine was founded.

Prizes

In addition to a trip to Berlin, the winners can also look forward to receiving the following attractive prizes:
Capital investment in Ökovision. This is a product from Versiko AG, a financial services provider that “combines conventional insurance and capital investments with ecological investment”.
A ‘solar package’, comprising a solar-powered world receiver, pocket torch, etc. An outdoor jacket from a manufacturer endorsed by Stiftung Warentest, the German consumer protection organisation, as demonstrating corporate responsibility and transparency.

In addition, fair trade products will also be awarded for the photo voted best picture by the public.

The competition is open to anyone anywhere in the world. The competition closes on 22 July 2005. Each participant can submit up to three photos in either analogue or digital form. You can find further details about the competition at www.facing-sustainability.de and at www.facing-sustainability.org.

‘Facing sustainability’ is a contribution to the ‘UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development’ and is being organised in cooperation with the Transfer-21 programme of the BLK, the Bund-Länder Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion.

Facing Sustainability Award
Photos – People – Stories of Sustainability

German Council for Sustainable Development starts photo competition

Berlin, 30.03.2005 Sustainability is going to be given a face. The German Council for Sustainable Development has launched a photo competition for the “Facing Sustainability Award”. The entrants will be asked to send in photographs of people who are actively engaged in providing that “little bit more” sustainability. It might be a celebrity or a neighbour, a student or a project team member.

Entrants are called on to submit portrait photos, or even close-ups taken from unusual perspectives. In addition to the portrait, photos can also be sent in of other objects or landscapes which have some sort of direct link to the individual who is portrayed. As well as artistic considerations, importance is attached to pictures that tell a story. The viewers should learn more about the portrayed persons and their world. A short text explains more about the individual, and why the entrant chose them.

Entry conditions

Anybody who is interested can take part. Professional and amateur photographers of all ages are eligible. Before the closing date of 22 July each entrant can submit up to three photos in analog or digital form. The Competition Office will be calling primarily on teachers and students from all over the world to take part in “facing sustainability”. A prominent jury will be assessing the entries in August.

The winners and the people they have portrayed will be invited to come to Berlin in September, and an interesting programme will be provided. The pictures will be exhibited at the annual congress of the German Council for Sustainable Development. Further details about the competition will be available from 1 April 2005 under www.facing-sustainability.de and www.facing-sustainability.org

“Facing sustainability” is a contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and is carried out in cooperation with the BLK-Programme Transfer-21 of the German Joint Commission for Educational Planning (BLK).
